Is VPN ProxyWave safe?

Low risk

VPN ProxyWave sends your proxy login credentials to any website's HTTP authentication prompt, not just the upstream proxy.

When the built-in proxy is active, the extension registers a webRequest.onAuthRequired listener across all sites and always answers with the decrypted proxy credentials fetched from data.proxyshade.com, without checking whether the auth challenge actually came from the proxy. As a result, an ordinary website that presents its own Basic/Digest login prompt while the proxy is on receives the same username and password meant only for the proxy server.

Where it sends data

Destinations our analysis observed VPN ProxyWave contacting. Sending data somewhere is not a finding on its own - an extension that syncs your settings has to talk to its own server - but it is where your data can go, and who else it goes to.

  • data.proxyshade.com

VPN ProxyWave sends data to data.proxyshade.com. No other extension we have analyzed sends data here.
