Is Site Palette safe?

Low risk

Site Palette accepts an unauthenticated message from any page and adopts whatever token that page supplies as the user's login credential.

A content script that runs on every website listens for a 'externally_connectable.login' message with no check on where it came from, then reads a localStorage value and hands it to the extension's background page to save as the palette.site login token. Any website a user visits can plant its own value there and have the extension adopt it as the account credential, which is then sent with every request to the extension's own API.

Shared hosts - 4 hostnames

Hostnames hardcoded in this extension that few other listings call. That can mean one operator behind both, and it can equally mean a small shared vendor, so it is context rather than a conclusion. Hosts that many listings call are left out: they are services, not connections.

What it can do

Permissions this extension asks for, as declared in version 2.25. Asking for a permission is not a finding on its own - it is what the extension can do if it chooses to.

  • Read and change your data on every site you visit

    <all_urls>

  • Store data in your browser

    storage

  • See the address and title of every tab you have open

    tabs

  • Run its own code inside the pages you visit

Where it sends data

Destinations our analysis observed Site Palette contacting. Sending data somewhere is not a finding on its own - an extension that syncs your settings has to talk to its own server - but it is where your data can go, and who else it goes to.

  • api.palette.site

    Site Palette sends data to api.palette.site. No other extension we have analysed sends data here.
