Is Turn off read receipts for Google Chat safe?

This extension lets users disable read receipts while reading Google Chat messages in Gmail.

It adds a "READ RECEIPTS" button in the Gmail Chat interface that can be toggled off to read Google Chat messages without sending read receipts. The store description notes that some chat functionality may not work correctly while read receipts are disabled and recommends turning it back on after reading messages.
